Engineering

The NS engineering team maintains 9,700+ bridges and 158 tunnels over a 19,500 mile rail network and are responsible for implementing Positive Train Control (PTC), including the installation of: over 3,000 radio towers, 2,900 wayside radios, and 3,200 wayside interface units. In addition, NS engineers maintain and repair the 4,268 Locomotive fleet and the 69,000 freight car fleet.  Engineers work within one of three groups within the company: Mechanical, Maintenance of Way and Structures (MW&S), or Communications and Signals (C&S). Supervisors of engineering related areas are responsible for having the right people for the right job in order to keep all equipment and infrastructure in full working order to maintain efficiency and a safe working environment.
