Job Summary

Provides engineering and technical support for Norfolk Southern’ s business attraction and industrial development efforts. Oversees conceptual planning of track connections and expansions for new and expanding customers across a multistate territory. Promotes rail-inclusive development planning for industrial sites and parks accessible by Norfolk Southern.

 

Primary Activities and Responsibilities:

  • Produces conceptual engineering plans for new and expanding customers across the eastern U.S.
  • Advises existing and prospective customers on rail facility design, considering track geometry and capacity, safe on-site railcar handling, up- and downstream railroad operations, environmental impacts, alternative development strategies, and future expansion potential.
  • Produces track schematics, operations animations, and renderings to illustrate engineering proposals and align internal and external project stakeholders on site development strategies.
  • Participates in meetings with customers and engineering consultants to discuss track and site development solutions.
  • Participates in discussions with Norfolk Southern’ s Operations and Engineering teams to obtain internal approvals on track alignments and capacity requirements for newly constructed customer rail facilities.
  • Collaborates with Norfolk Southern’ s Industrial Development Managers and with external economic development partners on rail-inclusive site planning and site marketing to industrial prospects.
  • Produces exhibit drawings for inclusion in customer track agreements.
  • Assists Industrial Development Managers and GIS Services teams in the management of our GIS database.

 

Education/Experience

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree (BS) in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2 years of combined experience in site development, railroad engineering, transportation engineering, or project/construction management.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) Certificate

Technical Skills:

  • Computer-aided design (Bentley MicroStation, Bentley OpenRoads, Bentley OpenSite, AutoDesk AutoCAD, AutoDesk Civil3D, etc.)
  • Microsoft Office software (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint)

Aptitudes and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of transportation and land development engineering
  • Written, verbal, and visual communication skills
  • Poise in front of customers/clients
  • Relationship development skills
  • Organization, planning, and prioritization of concurrent projects
