Primary Purpose:

Engineers, designs, and implements RF solutions to enhance railroad operations. Oversees Federal Communication Commission (FCC)compliance with respect to railroad operations.

 

Principal Duties:

  • Evaluates, designs and develops radio frequency (RF) two way radio systems in the VHF, UHF, and 900MHz for voice & data communications, inventory systems, and remote control locomotives.
  • Prepares and submits FAA-OE technical and physical data for proposed antenna structures and frequencies that could cause obstruction to aviation or interfere with avionics under the Federal Communications Commission's jurisdiction.
  • Generates RF coverage analysis using industry standard software considering frequency, distance, transmitter power, receiver sensitivity, antenna height, antenna gain, variations in terrain, signal obstructions, ambient noise, and interference.
  • Manages the maintenance of the Remedy database for over 2200 FCC licenses and 5000 radio installations for over 37,000 portable, mobile and base radios and 200 plus users.
  • Administration, National Radio Astronomy Observatory, and AAR (TTCI) liaison for licensing and operation of RF equipment and antenna structures in conformity to the Federal Code of Regulations existing, and replaces obsolete RF stations. Supports field operations with radio software, equipment problems and modifications.
  • Supports Senior Management on various projects voice radio base stations, mobiles, portables, data radio, PTC, HOT/EOT, highway crossing monitors, wayside detectors, AEI scanners, and Teklogix equipment.
  • Supports NS participation in AAR Wireless Communications Committee. Protects NS frequencies that are licensed from encroachment by other RR's and Industrial Group license applicants. Resolves RF interference problems that NS causes to other companies and other companies cause to NS.
