Compensation Analyst

Primary Purpose:
Assist in the development, implementation and administration of compensation programs for Norfolk
management employees, including executive and management programs, as well as short-term
and long-term incentives, merit increases, market pay data analysis, and employee recognition.

Principal Duties:
• Responsible for the completion and submission of compensation surveys, analysis of results and
recommendations for market pay adjustments

• Conducts job evaluations and market analysis to ensure jobs are appropriately banded and pay is aligned
with the current market and Norfolk Southern’s compensation objectives

• Assists in the preparation and review of documentation for Compensation Committee meetings

• Assists in the annual incentive matrix design, setup and testing. Provides quarterly estimates and
forecasting for accounting expense accruals. Coordinates with Law and Tax on plan updates

• Assists in the management and administration of long-term incentive awards. Partners with
the Corporate Secretary’s Office, Accounting, and Law to ensure accuracy and timeliness
of the awards

• Assists in the planning, preparation, review and execution of the annual merit salary increase
planning process. Works with Compensation team to design and distribute training materials to merit planners
and approvers

• Communicates merit increase policies, guidelines, timeline, and tools to Human Resources Business Partners to
equip them to advise merit planners and executives on the merit increase planning process.

• Partners with Compensation team and Human Resources leadership on a variety of projects, including program
design, benchmarking, and implementations such as department compensation reviews, updating documents
on the Employ Resource Center, and participating in various compensation surveys

• Builds and analyzes queries utilizing Spinifex (SAP), BW, and third-party vendor systems to run
recurring and ad-hoc compensation reports

• Collaborates with Human Resource Business Partners and departments on compensation
related issues, such as new hire offers, market increases, and managing compensation exceptions

• Responsible for the management of job creation and maintenance in SAP and PayFactors

• Assists in the preparation and distribution of employee communication materials related to compensation programs

• Administers the employee severance pay plan

• Manages the employee recognition programs

Manages  outside vendors for outplacement assistance, surveys and recognition programs

• Identifies process improvement opportunities and implements solutions
