Job Description

Norfolk Southern has an immediate opening for a Design Thinker/User Experience (UX) Designer.   This position requires experience and/or training in User Experience Design methods with emphasis on Design Thinking principles. The candidate is expected to have demonstrable skills in creation of design strategies leveraging current best practices around user driven development.  The candidate should be prepared to share experiences of end-to-end design processes utilizing design thinking principles.  This position will be a part of the Synergy team, a sub-group of the IT department responsible for SAP projects, at our campus in Midtown Atlanta, GA.

Responsibilities

  • Designing and modernizing the user experience for SAP applications supporting key business processes.
  • Develop and execute effective workshops with business partners and employee groups to develop the user interface for new projects, and to use similar methodology to facilitate redesigning of existing user interfaces.
  • Interview application end users to understand pain points, determine how the users navigate and use existing systems, and provide detailed plans and recommendations to improve user experience.
  • Facilitate brainstorming and co-design activities with internal groups and with business partners, functional and technical teams.
  • Translates business goals into appropriate design approaches while assessing feasibility and optimization of the solution.  Participates in the development of cost/benefit analysis.
  • Create and maintain a design pattern library for web and mobile.
  • Proactively identify process improvements including clear and concise solution definitions.
  • Candidate’s portfolio of work should include designs from concept to finish demonstrating design rationale and possible business impact.
  • Develops proof of concepts to demonstrate proposed technical solutions including low and high resolution prototyping through to screen designs which are brand aligned and scalable. 
  • Provides guidance, mentoring, and training to both IT and Business partners, in the design practices and standards that link back to best practices in Design Thinking and Customer Driven Design principles.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree
    • Preferred Degree Paths: Computer and Information Sciences, Computer Engineering, Management Information Systems and majors in a similar field of study will be considered
  • Knowledge and experience in some of the following areas: Customer Driven Design Methodologies, Design Thinking and UX Designer.
  • Experience with:
    • Design and prototyping tools (e.g. SAP Build, Adobe Creative Suite, Invision, Sketch and/or Axure).
    • Strong Design Leadership and Management with excellent influencing skills.
    • Defining Style Guides and Pattern Library for global design patterns.
    • Designing for Accessibility.
  • Understanding of Agile, Lean UX and Mobile First design
  • Understanding of modern frameworks/utilities such as Angular, React, OpenUI5, RxJS, Redux, etc.
