Job Description:

Norfolk Southern Corporation, a Fortune 500 company, seeks an energetic problem solver with proficiency in the area of J2EE, DB2, SQL and object oriented analysis and design principles.  This applicant must be highly motivated to meet project deadlines and technology challenges. The Norfolk Southern Information Technology Department is searching for a qualified candidate to join a dynamic new development team working on a multi-year project to further automate the transportation field work. 


This position provides the opportunity for the individual to be involved with application development, reports development and vendor management. Development responsibilities include overall application design and development of critical application components using Java EE technologies. Other responsibilities include on-call support, vendor management, trouble-shooting and resolution.


Preferred: BS in Engineering, Computer Science, MIS, or a related field


  • Develop and support software using Java EE and Java Script with emphasis on reusability.
  • Understand and analyze details provided in the use case, or task narratives.
  • Estimate effort for technical analysis, design and development.
  • Communicate with the business area and other teams to define system interface requirements.
  • Assist others regarding setup and development of integration technologies.
  • Technical testing and trouble shooting in a test lab environment.
  • Analyze and resolve technical issues independently.
  • On-call support.

Skills Required:

  • 5+ years of solid professional work experience in development and support of Java EE applications.
  • 3+ years of experience in developing large enterprise systems involving complex integration of multiple technologies.
  • Solid experience in enterprise web and backend application development.
  • Strong experience in middleware messaging systems like IBM MQ and Tibco EMS.
  • Solid experience in XML, Web Services, Messaging, IBM WebSphere MQ
  • Experience using IntelliJ, Eclipse, Java EE, Junit, XML, JBoss, TFS and Git.
  • Strong experience in working with business partners and vendors to define requirements, co-ordinate with vendors and deliver quality products.
  • Relational database experience: DB2, Teradata, MS SQL Server, Oracle
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective problem solving skills with the ability to identify root causes and resolve issues.
  • Self-motivated; Ability to organize and manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Strong collaboration skills, team oriented and ability to work in agile development environment.
  • Experience in Unix/Linux

Skills/Experience Preferred:

  • Tibco BW exposure is a plus.
  • Transportation/Logistic Industry experience is a plus
