Senior Data Scientist

 

The Senior Data Scientist in FP&A is a role that requires a balance of theorical knowledge, hands-on coding experience and exposure to real-world problem-solving.

In this role, you will help enhance our decision-making using insights from large scale data sets containing operational and financial information. The successful candidate will be a person who excels at diving into complex data to identify patterns and root causes. You will routinely work and interact with cross-functional teams including Operations, Marketing, Finance and IT. You will be a key stakeholder in the dialogue to make data-driven decisions and represent senior management’s perspective in technical discussions.

 

Principal Duties

  • Partner with IT to develop, optimize and maintain data pipelines
  • Evaluate the accuracy and quality of data sources, and develop appropriate remedies for data gaps
  • Build exploratory data analyses and work collaboratively with others to develop hypotheses and test them in the data
  • Effectively utilize appropriate statistical, simulation and machine learning models and techniques to solve various business problems
  • Articulate nuanced, business-focused interpretations of analytical and modeling results
  • Collaborate with application development teams to integrate developed models into a production environment
  • Advise leadership in building world-class analytics at NS
  • Build the team by teaching and mentoring

 

 

 

Work Experience

Work Experience:
Minimum Level: 2+ Years

Preferred Level: 5+ Years

Education

Minimum: Bachelor's degree with extensive relevant work experience
Preferred: Master's degree or PhD
Preferred Majors: Operations Research, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering or other quantitative fields

Required Skills and Abilities:  

  • Mastery of SQL and data relationships (CTEs, window functions, etc.)
  • Fluency in Python, R or another scientific computing language
  • Experience working with large data sets and “Big Data” solutions (e.g. NoSQL, Spark, cloud-based analytics)
  • Academic training and hands-on coding experience with statistical modeling, operations research and/or machine learning techniques
  • Experience with simulation modeling

Preferred Experience:

  • Exposure to optimization of large networked operations (railroads, airlines, etc.) and/or supply chain operations
  • An understanding of modern analytics ecosystems (processes, tools, conventions), best practices and trade-offs
  • Experience communicating data insights to drive business impact
