Norfolk Southern is seeking a motivated and collaborative Management Trainee – Logistics Operation Supervisor to join our 24/7 operations team. This full-time, early career role is designed to provide hands-on training and mentorship over 9–12 months, preparing you for a future leadership position managing a team responsible for the optimal utilization of business resources.
As a trainee, you will learn how to lead a team that ensures the right people are in the right place at the right time to keep our operations running smoothly. You’ll gain deep insight into logistics, collaborate across multiple departments, and develop the critical thinking skills needed to identify and solve business challenges.In this role you’ll be immersed in the operational side of resource management—learning how to prioritize assignments, respond to service disruptions, and support the broader network through strategic decision-making.Field immersion is a key part of the experience. You’ll spend time alongside Train & Engine (T&E) crews, traveling in pools, staying overnight in crew hotels, and gaining firsthand insight into the realities of scheduling and resource deployment.
Key Responsibilities:
Training & Development:
- Participate in a structured training program focused on operational logistics, labor agreements, business systems, and leadership skills.
- Shadow experienced Operations Supervisors and gradually take on supervisory responsibilities.
Resource Management:
- Learn to lead a team of employees who are responsible for assigning and dispatching resources to meet operational demand.
- Monitor resource availability and ensure timely actions are in alignment with operational priorities.
Operational Collaboration:
- Work closely with Transportation, Network Operations, and other departments to align resources with business demands.
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders to anticipate and respond to operational changes.
Root Cause Analysis:
- Investigate resource shortages and identify underlying causes (e.g., scheduling inefficiencies, absenteeism, policy constraints).
- Recommend and help implement process improvements to enhance resource utilization and reduce delays.
Compensation:
- Starting Salary: $82,000 annually during the Management Trainee program (approximately 9–12 months).
- Post-Training Promotion: Upon successful completion of the program, trainees are promoted to a full-time leadership role with a salary of $88,000 annually.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain, Logistics, or a related field.Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel (formulas, pivot tables, charts).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work a rotating schedule (including nights and weekends) in a fast-paced, 24/7 operational environment.
- Willingness to travel and participate in field-based learning experiences.
