Position Overview:

 

Norfolk Southern is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Management Trainee – Safety Operations to support the development, execution, and continuous improvement of safety programs across the organization. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in safety program management, data analysis, and cross-functional collaboration while contributing to the advancement of Norfolk Southern’s safety culture.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the tracking and reporting of safety programs to ensure alignment with departmental goals and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead the development, documentation, and distribution of Safety Department Standard Procedures to promote consistency and compliance.
  • Assist in the coordination and facilitation of safety initiatives aimed at enhancing safety awareness and knowledge across the organization.
  • Conduct in-depth reviews of safety data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Provide administrative support including compiling training materials, scheduling sessions, and coordinating logistics for safety-related events.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of presentation materials for internal stakeholders, including Norfolk Southern staff and the Board of Directors.

 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience or academic background in safety, administration, or project management.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data and generate actionable insights.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly for procedural documentation and stakeholder engagement.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including PowerPoint, Excel, and PDF tools; familiarity with data visualization platforms such as Power BI is a plus.
