Job Description
Norfolk Southern’s Product Owners are responsible for guiding the development and management of technology products throughout their lifecycles. A Senior Product Owner is an experienced position responsible for leading the delivery of 1-2 products. Senior Product Owners work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, design, operations, marketing, and sales, to ensure the successful creation and launch of a product. A Senior Product Owner’s responsibility can range from conceiving of new software applications built from the ground up, making incremental improvements to existing applications, or carefully sunsetting older applications without disrupting day-to-day functioning. Most Senior Product Owners will be doing all three at any given time. Many of these software applications will serve internal users at Norfolk Southern, while other applications will be used by people external to Norfolk Southern (partners, vendors, clients, consumers, etc.)Norfolk Southern’s Product Management discipline sits at the intersection of business, data, design, engineering, security, operations, support, and marketing. Senior Product Owners have a deep understanding and deep respect for each of these disciplines. They prioritize system development to maximize resources and operational impact. They serve as the connective tissue that brings together strategic business goals, human-centered design, future-forward engineering, streamlined operations, and best-in-class support.
The ideal candidate will have deep concern with the quality of products developed by the team, never settling for “it’s good enough” or “it gets the job done” or “it’s just how it’s always worked”. Experience building products in an operations environment (Transportation, Industrials, etc.) will be an asset.
Primary Scope:
- Conducts market research, define product strategy, gather requirements, and prioritize features for operations systems development.
- Collaborates with the development team to oversee the product's implementation.
- Navigates ambiguous information sources to develop relevant problem statements and define technological solutions.
Principal Duties
- Conceive new software applications from ideation to implementation.
- Collates and prioritizes systems requirements that meet both the business and user needs.
- Analyzes Return on Investment for new systems, features, and enhancements, prioritizing accordingly.
- Monitors the product's performance, gathers user feedback, and makes data-driven decisions to improve systems functionality and user experience.
- Works in concert with Software Development to chart the Product Roadmap.
- Serves as a conduit between end users and systems development.
- Contributes to long-term development strategy for Operational Systems.
What we are looking for
- 2+ years’ experience in a product manager role, working with a high performing technology team.
- Experience defining, building, and shipping complex technology products
- Experience collaborating with designers, developers and business stakeholders in an agile environment, i.e., working with Jira and/or other Kanban-based tools
- Experience creating and iterating product roadmaps
- Excellent communication skills, and the ability to work across multiple products aligning on goals and deliverables
- Genuine user empathy and passion for solving their most complex problems with the products you ship
- An entrepreneurial mindset - you must be comfortable rolling up your sleeves, thriving in ambiguity, and getting the work done
Nice to have:
- Familiarity with UI/UX principles, modern software development
- Experience building products in an operations environment (Transportation, Industrials, etc.)
Job Related Experience:
Minimum Level: 2 years.
Preferred Level: 3+ years.
Education
Preferred: Bachelor’s degree
