Job Title: Senior Technology Engineer – Mobile Applications


Norfolk Southern Corporation seeks a Senior Technology Engineer – Mobile Applications in Atlanta, Georgia.  This position will serve as a front-end software applications developer engineer responsible for utilizing theoretical and practical knowledge of computer science in order to develop hybrid, cross-platform mobile applications for use by internal Norfolk Southern stakeholders and external Norfolk Southern customers.  The individual will be involved in the development of new mobile applications, as well as feature enhancements to existing applications.  This position requires domestic travel approximately two (2) days per month.   


Job Duties:

  • Work with business partners to gather requirements, prepare and develop functional specifications, and communicate progress throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Create functional specifications and project plans based on the business requirement input.
  • Analyze the user needs and software requirements to determine feasibility of design within time constraints.
  • Analyze and design technical solutions for business requirements.
  • Design creative prototypes according to specifications.
  • Create conceptual diagrams and visual mock-ups and manage detailed user interface specifications.
  • Provide platform-specific designs such iOS and Android specific.
  • Design and develop hybrid mobile applications by following Cross-platform and Platform-centered workflow using the latest versions of Angular, Ionic, and ExtJS.
  • Develop the customer-faced applications using Angular, Ionic, and ExtJS Framework.
  • Write high quality source code to program complete applications within deadlines.
  • Follow the guidelines and industry coding standards or libraries (RxJS, ES6, MVVM, MVVC, etc.) for producing high quality, sustainable, and transferrable software and applications.
  • Implement best practices and methods to improve the development process within the team and organization.
  • Develop the REST API Services using Java, J2EE.
  • Automate the build and deployment tasks using Gradle and Jenkins.
  • Develop modular and reusable components.
  • Participate in all aspects of the software development lifecycle, using principles such as Agile and Waterfall methodologies.
  • Develop and direct software system testing and validation procedures, programming, and documentation.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation to assist with support and maintenance of applications.
  • Collaborates with developers, architects, and product owners to plan, design, develop, and test software applications.
  • Provide proactive advice and feedback throughout the development lifecycle for prevention and early correction of quality problems.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship for junior developers.


Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Information Systems, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, or a related, relevant field (equivalent foreign degree accepted).
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a front-end software applications developer engineer role developing sophisticated applications utilizing a hybrid approach.  This experience must include at least two (2) years of experience:
    • Utilizing the latest versions of Angular and Ionic framework;
    • Developing hybrid, cross-platform mobile applications;
    • Utilizing Cordova plug-ins to access native functionality of the mobile devices;
    • Working with Java for programming and application development;
    • Utilizing JavaScript/TypeScript in application/web development; and
    • Utilizing Web Technologies for application/web development.
  • Demonstrated ability to:      
    • Work in a team environment; and
    • Manage multiple projects concurrently within a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of:
    • Testing methodologies, strategies, and automated tools;
    • UI and UX design; and
    • Architecture best practices.
  • Must be able to work weekends and on-call as necessary.
