Primary Purpose: 

The individual is responsible for maintenance of NS car fleet to a high level of reliability and availability to our customers in transportation. This includes overseeing all program and heavy repairs to system revenue and non-revenue rail freight cars worked at any shop on the Norfolk Southern system and at any contract shop. 

 

Principal Duties: 

  • Handles AAR billing, forecasts, and reports for all cars (system, foreign and privately owned rail freight cars), which are repaired at any Norfolk Southern system repair location. 
  • Directs Oversight of car disposition, car values and scrapping of retired cars. 
  • Maintains NS car maintenance history. 
  • Develop strategy and vision for railcar technology to keep NS at the forefront of industry changes to maintain competitiveness and cost control  
  • Manages multi-million-dollar budget for the maintenance of more than 56,000 rails cars owned or leased, in addition to capital and expense projects ensures efficient and reliable railcars. 
  • Works with sustainability groups to continue advancement of railcar technology  
  • Promote the use of Agile methodology to drive continuous improvement.  
  • Represents NS on AAR ARB Committee and other associated Technical Advisory Groups (TAGS) 
  • Oversight of New Car Acquisitions including Specifications, Requisitions, Receipts and Sample Car Inspections  
  • Oversight of Multi-Level Pool Sites and Pre-Trip Contractors including TTCI/AAR Auto Ramp Audits, Certifications and Review and Approval of all Invoices 
  • Oversight of all outside NS Contract Shop locations 
  • Oversight of AAR Car Repair Billing, payable and receivable invoices ~$200M annually 
  • NS Mechanical liaison for NS Wrecking Contractors 
  • Oversight of the distribution of over 2,600 NS EOTS and rental settlements to foreign carriers 

 

Job Related Experience: 

  • Minimum Level: 6 - 10 years
