Job Description

Job Summary:

Provides civil engineering support for Norfolk Southern’s industrial development and customer expansion efforts. Works with customers to design and plan for new track connections and industry sidetracks to be served by Norfolk Southern

Primary Activities and Responsibilities:

  • Produces conceptual engineering plans for new and expanding customers across a multistate territory.
  • Conducts meetings with customers and engineering consultants to discuss track and site development solutions.
  • Advises existing and prospective customers on rail facility design, considering track geometry and capacity, safe on-site railcar handling, up- and downstream railroad operations, environmental impacts, alternative development strategies, and future expansion potential.
  • Collaborates with Norfolk Southern’s Industrial Development Managers to promote rail-inclusive development planning for industrial sites and parks accessible by Norfolk Southern.
  • Participates in discussions with Norfolk Southern’s Operations and Engineering teams to obtain internal approvals on alignment and capacity requirements for customers’ newly constructed sidetracks.
  • Produces track schematics, operations animations, and renderings to bring engineering proposals “to life” and align internal and external project stakeholders on site development strategies.
  • Produces exhibit drawings for inclusion in customer track agreements.
  • Provides railroad engineering and operations expertise to the department and to prospective customers looking to locate or expand on Norfolk Southern.
  • Assists Industrial Development Managers and GIS Services teams in the management of Norfolk Southern’s industrial site portfolio.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BS) in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1 year or more of professional experience in site development, railroad engineering, or transportation engineering.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license.


Technical Skills:


  • Computer-aided design software (Bentley Microstation, Bentley OpenRoads, Bentley OpenRail, AutoDesk AutoCAD, AutoDesk Civil3D, etc.)
  • Microsoft Office software (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint)


  • 3D rendering software (AutoDesk 3DS Max, Bentley LumenRT)
  • Data processing and analytics software (ESRI ArcGIS, Alteryx)
  • Adobe Creative Cloud software (Acrobat/DC, Illustrator, Photoshop, XD)

Aptitudes and Abilities

  • Knowledge of transportation and land development engineering
  • Knowledge of railroad track and/or roadway construction
  • Written, verbal, and visual communication skills
  • Poise in front of customers/clients
