Job Description

As a Fortune 300 company, Norfolk Southern employs over 26,000 employees, the vast majority of whom are covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement.  Working in the Labor / Union relations department, you will assist with the review, research, and preparation of responses to questions, claims, and grievances that arise under collective bargaining agreement(s) for the various unions that fall under the jurisdiction of the position. You will prepare written submissions to defend the company's position in arbitration hearings.

 

Additionally, You will leverage analytical tools and applications to maximize workforce productivity and defend the company's rights through researching and analyzing historical data sets, past practices, agreement interpretations, and arbitral precedence.

 

What makes a successful Labor Relations Management Trainee?

 

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong analytical thinking skills. Familiarity with one or more of the following 
    • Excel
    • Access 
    • SQL 
    • Spotfire
  • Willingness to study reference materials, ask questions and resolve problems
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Solid interpersonal skills along with the ability to grow from constructive feedback
  • Ability to manage time, prioritize work demands effectively, and meet deadlines without sacrificing standards of work
  • Ability to interact with various levels of management while being positive and professional
  • Solid decision-making skills

Travel Required: 0 - 2 days per month

Management Trainee --> Labor Relations Specialist --> Assistant Labor Relations Officer --> Labor Relations Officer

 

Education/Experience

 

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree
    • Preferred Degree Paths: Business, Business Analyst, Political Science, Law, Labor Relations, as well as Liberal Arts degrees including will be considered
