A Day in the Life of a Track Geometry Intern

As a Track Geometry Intern, you will work alongside our Track Inspection group as they inspect our network for track defects. You will also work alongside MW&S (Maintenance of Way and Structures) field crews, officers, and staff on a variety of projects. Primary duties include assisting with maintenance, repair, and development of track inspection systems, such as our track geometry car and locomotive systems. Student will learn about train and track dynamics, track inspection, system development, and maintenance operations. Interested applicants must have a desire to work hands-on, in both office and field environments. The goal of the program is to expose students to the day-to-day operations in our Track Inspection group.

  • General hands-on knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment is helpful, with good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree
  • Minimum of Sophomore standing
  • Preferred Degree Paths: Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
  • Desired Training: PCB Design, Engineering Systems Design, Machine Design, Foundations of Mechanical Systems, System Controls and Integration, Integrated Systems Design, Logic and Computing Devices, CAD Design



  •  Freshman (27 or fewer credits) - $3,430/month
  •  Sophomore (28 to 59 credits) - $3,768/month
  • Junior (60 to 89 credits) - $4,107/month
  • Senior (90 or more credits) - $4,347/month
  • Master Student - $5,126/month
  • Postgraduate Student - $5,960/month
  • Living stipend of $425/bi-monthly is available to those who qualify.


Work Environment

  • Training location: Roanoke, VA.
  • Work between the hours of 7 AM to 4 PM Monday - Friday plus additional hours as required, including occasional overnight travel. The possibility of travel is less than (5) days/month.
  • Able to work outside and be on your feet daily.
