Job Description

The Norfolk Southern Track Geometry Group operates and maintains precision, real-time, track inspection vehicles. A Supervisor Test Cars acquires and evaluates track geometry and rail wear data by operating high-speed, automated track geometry measurement vehicles across the Norfolk Southern System. This equipment may be rail-bound vehicles or hi-rail trucks.

We are seeking a Supervisor Test Cars to join our technical staff for the development, operation, and support of these track inspection technologies.

 

Responsibilities Include

  • Reinforce at every opportunity the Engineering Department mission to provide a safe, fast, and reliable infrastructure network at the lowest possible cost.
  • Demonstrate safety leadership thorough daily interactions with other Engineering Department field personnel, acting with a customer-centric, operations-driven mindset.
  • Coordinate with local Engineering and Transportation Department supervision for efficient testing, and arrange appropriate travel accordingly.  Proactively communicate with subsequent territories.
  • Ensure equipment is operational, accessible, and adequately stocked with food, water, fuel, housekeeping and office supplies, first aid and PPE equipment, etc prior to the arrival of local staff.  Maintain a professional and comfortable environment for accompanying staff.
  • Provide a high reliability of the track geometry and rail wear data acquisition systems through rigorous calibration practices, proactive electrical and mechanical systems maintenance, evaluation and troubleshooting.
  • Provide corrections and note any errors or omissions in the facilities database.
  • Process collected data, conduct post-processing analysis, and produce various reports for further use by Engineering Department staff.
  • Oversee data transfer activities, including transmittal of actionable defect information to local staff.  Provide education and explanation of defect types, measurement criteria, and field validation as needed.

 

Education Preferred

  • AS degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering Technology preferred but not required, or 2-4 years relevant technical experience in rail industry

 

Job related experience

  • Operation of rail-bound and hi-rail equipment.
  • Inspection of track and structures for compliance with NS and FRA track safety standards.
  • Use of Lock-Out/Tag-Out, RWP/Blue-Flag and similar safety procedures to perform routine electrical and mechanical systems maintenance.

 

Skills and abilities

  • Strong verbal communication skills including the conduct of job safety briefings.
  • Ability to climb a ladder to gain access to railway freight cars, passenger cars, and locomotives.
  • Ability to work in tight locations on, under, and around rail vehicles.
  • Proficiency with hand tools for installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of electrical and mechanical systems and components.
  • Competency with Microsoft Office suite.
