A Day in the Life of a C&S Supervisor

Our Communications and Signals department is a paramount staple within our operations team. They ensure all the devices such as, but not limited to, wayside and crossing signal systems, defect detectors, automatic equipment identification (AEI) systems, and hump yard systems are installed, inspected and maintained. Moving freight safely and efficiently to our customers is our number one priority and the key to our success here at Norfolk Southern and the C&S team ensures we are able to do just that.

The trainee program is a 32-week journey providing leadership training and technical growth opportunities to prepare trainees to assume the prestigious duties of a C&S Officer upon completion of the program. Trainees will foster relationships with current C&S supervisors and learn the most efficient and effective ways to lead world class teams ranging from roughly 8-15 technicians. Additionally, through on-the-job training, trainees will learn to speak the language of the railroad, including full knowledge of railroad signaling, and how to install, operate, and perform required inspections on our unique systems. Trainees will be expected to travel during the program, have availability outside of normal business hours, and have flexibility with their schedule to support our 24/7 operation. 


What Makes a Successful C&S Supervisor?

  • Basic DC circuit knowledge
  • Previous leadership experience either in classroom or work environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with an emphasis on Excel, and the ability to learn new/proprietary programs
  • Ability to prioritize and make decisions
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Knowledge of radio technology
  • Willingness to relocate and/or travel as needed



  • Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree
    • Preferred Degrees: Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or Computer Engineering
